Coren's Lifesite webcasts on CDThe Best of Michael Coren on LifeSite in Real Audio (Interim Publishing, Toronto, $15).
Review by Paul Tuns
The Interim
Interim readers will be familiar with journalist and broadcaster Michael Coren, not only from his column in this newspaper, but also from his writing in the Sun newspapers, his many books, and his Crossroads television show, Michael Coren Live. It's likely, however, that fewer readers are aware that Coren broadcasts special daily commentaries on the Internet at www.lifesite.net. Now some of those Internet broadcasts are collected on CD in The Best of Michael Coren on LifeSite.
The best of these might be his description, in just two minutes and 13 seconds, of when life begins. Listing scientific facts about the development of the unborn child he says birth is just an incident in a person's life. Coren says spreading the truth about the humanity of the child in the womb is the key to pro-life victory.
While some of the broadcasts are somewhat time-sensitive (such as several on Tom Long and the Canadian Alliance or pro-abortion novelist John Irving at the 2000 Oscars) they are all tied to what Coren describes in his first LifeSite broadcast as a commitment to life both before and after birth. That means opposing abortion and euthanasia but also being in favour of "the beauty, the dignity and respect" of all life. That means using sexuality, the "glorious thing of beauty given to us from God," properly and grasping "the traditional virtues, the permanent things," that religion teaches us.
Coren inveighs against the notion that we must "change with the times." But what if the times are bad? Coren asks. We should never acquiesce with evil. From the project to run a ship-board abortion clinic to "gay pride" parades, his commentaries are snappy little insights into why we must fight for the "permanent things."
Coren says "Life is both a wonder and a responsibility." That means we must both protect and celebrate it. That is what Coren does here in 21 entertaining and enlightening three-minute snippets.
