In Defense of Justifiable Homicide
Not so long ago, members of the abortion industry in the British Columbia,
particularly staff of Everywoman's Health Centre, brandished at a press conference a
document signed by a number of US activists in defense of "justifiable homicide".
The presentation of the document was promoted as proof positive of an
international conspiracy to eliminate abortion providers.
I first heard the term "justifiable homicide" at a meeting of the BC
Coalition for Abortion Clinics. An abortion rights activist got up and announced her
support of abortion, also mentioned she believed the unborn child was human, then
stated abortion was "justifiable
homicide."
It was only a few short years ago that I was involved in an abortion debate with
the lovely folks from Planned Parenthood. It was a sociology class at our local college.
The class consisted mostly of women, and they thanked me at the end and lamented
how disappointed they were that the PP rep had only used slogans in her presentation,
while I stuck to scientific evidence of life before birth.
They also conveyed something that frightened me. What was it you may ask?
They did not disagree with my presentation, indeed they accepted the science, the
proof, the evidence. But many of the students stated that although the fetus was a
human being, it was still a woman's "choice."
I then proceeded to challenge them ... where they not, in effect, believers in the
doctrine of "justifiable homicide", and would that not have disastrous effects on our
culture and society ... believing that a member of the human race can be "justifiably"
killed? A small
number of girls approached me after the class and thanked me for challenging them on
their dangerous logic. Regrettably the majority left, embracing killing a human being in
the name of "choice."
In keeping with this deadly logic, we now have such feminists as Naomi Wolf and
Eileen McDonagh propagating the justifiable homicide doctrine to an accepting "pro-choice" crowd.
The latter has written a book entitled: "Breaking the Abortion Deadlock from
Choice to Consent." I read the book the other night and was amazed at the number of
leaders in the feminist movement now embracing the justifiable homicide doctrine.
Afraid they are loosing the battle, pro-abortion leaders are acknowledging what
pro-lifers have been saying for decades ... that the fetus is a human being.
But then they take it a step further.
McDonagh writes: "Although the fetus is innocent of conscious intention and
cannot control its behavior, it is not innocent of massively intruding on a woman's body
and liberty. Far from being the slave that is sacrificed in an abortion, the fetus is the one
that enslaves the woman when it imposes a wrongful pregnancy."
She also writes: "Abortion, therefore, is not comparable to a person's choice to
take a vacation; rather, it is comparable to a person's right to use deadly force to stop
his or her own kidnapping."
McDonagh continues throughout her justifiable homicide book to compare the
unborn child as a rapist, kidnapper, one that use "brute force" - the list goes on and on.
(why, one would think that women give birth to little Al Capones - all smoking a cigar!)
Sadly, if you ask the general public if they believe the unborn child is a human
being, the majority will say yes. McDonagh and the other feminists are merely
articulating where the majority of our society is today. We have so cheapened human
life that something as
innocent as a baby must now be demonized as a criminal in order to justify its impending
execution.
Like some televised gladiators match, society is now asked to give a thumbs up
or down to a battle where a woman and a baby are slugging it out. The public relations
odds are stacked against the woman, so the only way anyone will sleep at night, is to
stigmatize, use character assassination and just basically lie about the opponent.
So the next time your local pro-abortion group holds a press conference in which
a justifiable homicide document is presented, keep in mind that they themselves are the
greatest promoters of the doctrine of justifiable homicide. You might even remind the
media of that fact.
