CANADIAN BISHOP EMPHASIZES NEED FOR MORALITY IN POLITICS
Defends Campaign Life Against Attacks in Media
ST JOHN, NB, June 29 (LSN.ca) - J. Edward Troy, Bishop Emeritus of Saint John issued a letter to the editor of the Telegraph Journal earlier this month emphasizing the need for morality in politics. The letter came in response to attacks on Campaign Life Coalition for, in the bishop's words, "simply pointing out that people who are radically hostile to the cause of life and of traditional families occupy positions of influence" in Tom Long's campaign team. Responding to charges of Campaign Life Coalition being guilty of "vicious attack" and "outrageous behaviour", the bishop said: "What is vicious and outrageous here is (the Telegraph writer's) contention that those who do not share his version of religion and morality or do not accept the pro-abortion orthodoxy and the gay agenda are a threat to democracy and thus should be disqualified from holding public office."
Earlier this month, Campaign Life Coalition was sharply condemned by the mainstream media and some Canadian Alliance leadership campaign representatives as a result of misrepresentations and misunderstandings over the organization's analysis of the leadership candidates. Of particular contention were comments touching on abortion and homosexuality.
Pointing out the sensibility of moral legislation Bishop Troy writes: "Would it not be useful to promote a social and cultural climate which welcomes and cherishes children instead of regarding them as a burden standing in the way of a career or simply as a blob of tissue to eliminate?"
"In the view of Christian conservatives and vast numbers of other citizens, abortion is not only morally wrong but it is politically and socially wrong. Morally, it is an evil which destroys innocent human life, while politically and socially, it deprives our national community of its future human resources."
