CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER SAYS THIS ELECTION IS ABOUT ABORTION

OTTAWA, Oct 17 (LSN.ca) - The Hill Times, an independent and respected publication that covers Parliament Hill events, reports that Jean Chretien told his Liberal MP's at a late September Caucus meeting that the Party will campaign on the issue of "state versus church." The Times reports that Chretien said that elections "are about whether we will have a referendum on abortion or capital punishment. Or should the church set the school curriculum."

A Liberal who spoke to LifeSite refused to discuss anything about the caucus meeting. However, when asked whether the Party election focus would be on abortion he suggested such a strategy would be politically unwise and therefore unlikely to be pursued.

POPE TELLS CATHOLICS TO VOTE PRO-LIFE

ROME, Oct 17 (LSN.ca) - Addressing some 300,000 pilgrims for the Jubilee of Families on Saturday, Pope John Paul II urged Catholics to vote pro-life. He asked that all "people of good will who believe in these (pro-life) values remain united and strong. . . in political selection." He also pleaded with the families to "defend with all your might family values and respect for human life, right from the moment of conception."

On homosexuality the pope said "No one but parents can know just how important it is for children to have both figures - that of a mother and of a father. . . It is not a step forward for civilization to favor those tendencies which put in the shade that elementary truth and would like to see themselves put on the same legal footing."

SPAIN USING PGD TO TARGET BABY GIRLS FOR EXTERMINATION

BARCELONA, Oct 17 (LSN.ca) - Scientists from the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona and researchers from the Cefer Institute of Reproduction screened out all the girl embryos for a couple so that only boys were born in order to suppress transmission of the father's hemophilia. The embryos created through in-vitro fertilization underwent pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (eliminating the girls). Although males cannot pass on hemophilia to their children, girls whose fathers have the disease become carriers.

A Spanish researcher tried to dismiss the fact that they were eliminating baby girl human embryos stating, "We don't think it is an ethical problem, because we are just selecting the sex. We are dealing with embryos, which are not real human beings, only potential human beings."

PRO-LIFE YOUTH SENTENCED FOR WITNESS OUTSIDE ABORTUARY

VANCOUVER, Oct 17 (LSN.ca) - Mary Wagner, the 26-year-old pro-lifer in BC who was arrested in August outside Vancouver's notorious Everywoman's abortion clinic, was sentenced in court yesterday to one day in jail. Due to her refusal to sign a statement not to go back to the clinic she spent the last 46 days in custody.

John Hof, leader of Campaign Life Coalition, B.C. told LifeSite what an "incredible inspiration" Mary has been for the movement. Her peaceful witness, kneeling in front of the abortuary handing out roses has captured the hearts of many urging them on to pro-life action. "This doesn't happen when violence is committed against clinics," said Hof.

LIFESITE NEWSBYTES

Cardinal Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez, Archbishop of Santo Domingo, spoke out against the United Nations Sunday for their promotion of abortion. He noted that the process of acceptance of abortion begins when abortion ceases to be punished, then it is legalized and then it "is converted into a new human right universally admitted."
