EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT VOTES TO ALLOW FUNDING FOR HUMAN EMBRYO RESEARCH
BRUSSELS, November 15, 2001 (LSN.ca) - The European Parliament voted yesterday to pass first reading on a measure to fund research on human embryos. Euro-fam, a European pro-life network reports that the measure which deals with the 6th European Union research framework programme, with a 17 billion euros over four years (2002-06) budget, will now be sent back to the European Commission before it returns to the parliament for a definitive vote.
During the debate and vote on the first reading, MEPs backed funding for research which involves the use of excess embryos from fertility treatments and existing embryonic stem cell stocks. However, funding was prohibited for human cloning for research and reproductive purposes.
