FLAHERTY DEFENDS PRO-LIFE STAND IN STATEMENTS TO MEDIA
TORONTO, February 11, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Ontario Finance Minister and candidate for PC Ontario leader, Jim Flaherty, shocked reporters Friday with straightforward answers about his pro-life convictions. Flaherty faced questions on abortion at a news conference intended to announce his platform on crime. "You're asking me what do I believe in? I'm pro-life. I always have been. I don't anticipate ever changing that view."
Media questioned Flaherty on abortion following the release of the Campaign Life Coalition February newsletter which urged pro-lifers to become involved in the leadership election. The newsletter noted, "Jim Flaherty has declared himself pro-life, Tony Clement has declared himself pro-life with exceptions (although he refuses to state what those exceptions are exactly) and Ernie Eves, Chris Stockwell and Elizabeth Witmer have announced themselves to be pro-abortion."
When reporters attempted to suggest Flaherty should be concerned about the possible influx of pro-lifers into the party, he dismissed the notion. "I believe in a big tent. I welcome all people to our political party in Ontario," he said. On abortion services he said, "I would not change that status quo. Would I expand it? No. . . . I would not authorize the creation of any more clinics."
The Canadian Press reported that "Asked if abortion should be looked at during a review of the Canada Health Act, Flaherty said he thought that all issues about funding of services should be looked at." The sign-up deadline for the PC Party in order to be able to participate in the March 23rd leadership election is tomorrow (Feb 12) through the main party office and Feb 23 through local riding associations.
