DETAILS ON BECOMING INVOLVED IN ONTARIO PC AND ALLIANCE LEADERSHIP ELECTIONS

TORONTO, January 16, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The Ontario Progressive Conservative and Canadian Alliance leadership elections are once again generating significant interest and political opportunity for social conservatives. The interest has been heightened by the real prospect of electing candidates who would represent their concerns.

As a service to those who are interested in casting a vote to decide the next leader of either or both of the two parties, LifeSite provides below some of the voting procedures and rules for the leadership elections.

ONTARIO PC LEADERSHIP RACE:
To be eligible to cast a vote for PC Party of Ontario leadership the final date to obtain a $10 membership is FEBRUARY 12 through the head office (can be purchased on line or by telephone) and FEBRUARY 23 through local riding associations. Voters must be 14 years of age or older.

Election day is March 23, 2001. Voting will be staged across the province as well as at a leadership Convention. The procedure is a different 'one-person, one-vote' system than that of the Alliance. Each electoral district will be worth 100 'Riding Votes', distributed based on the percentage of votes each candidate receives in the riding. The voting of eligible party members within any one riding therefore has equal weight with all the other ridings.

CANADIAN ALLIANCE LEADERSHIP RACE:
A mail-in ballot is open to all Alliance party members with paid-up $10 membership as of MARCH 1. Minimum age is 16. Voting begins March 8. It is a one-person, one-vote election as during the last leadership contest.
