A PRO-LIFE HALLOWEEN UNICEF STRATEGY

As Halloween approaches, the now familiar UNICEF boxes will be much in evidence again. Banks, credit unions and some of the major grocery and department stores and, last but not least, children, will participate in this annual fund drive under the mistaken notion that they are supporting a worthy cause.

While UNICEF may say it does not support abortion, its reputation for sponsoring organizations that do goes back a number of years. For this reason, the Vatican withdrew its support for UNICEF in 1996. There has been no indication to date of any new developments that would cause the Vatican to reconsider its position.

This year again, when you open your door to a young 'Trick-or-treater' holding a UNICEF box, a recommendation is that you quietly drop a note in his or her bag together with your contribution of goodies. These small duplicated notes can be prepared ahead of time. Recommended wording is as follows:

Dear parent: This evening, your child was at our door for Halloween, carrying a collection box for UNICEF. While UNICEF does many fine things for children in need, some monies go to Third World abortion programs. For this reason we regret that we can no longer donate to this cause.

Signing the notes is not necessary. Do NOT get into a discussion or try to 'explain' to the child as the note speaks for itself and is addressed to the parents, not the child.
