New Book on U.S. Church Scandals Reveals More
Also, some serious errors in Michael Rose’s Good Bye Good Men
LIFESITE, September 17, 2002(LSN.ca) – For the past 15 years, Wanderer writer, Paul Likoudis has been intensely investigating and reporting on sexual scandals within the Catholic Church in both the U.S. and Canada. An almost lone voice in the wilderness for that time, he has finally been vindicated by the media exposures and criminal charges of the past several months.
Likoudis recently published a new book, “Amchurch Comes Out – The U.S. Bishops, Pedophile Scandals and the Homosexual Agenda”, which the Wanderer says is “the most definitive and comprehensive analysis of the present crisis of the Catholic Church in America”.
In a September 19 Wanderer editorial, Likoudis comments on developments since the U.S. bishops’ Dallas meeting. He says that despite the new policy, “there seem to be no regrets, no reparations, no firm resolve to amend their ‘pastoral practices’” which Likoudis believes were the source of the scandals.
He also emphasizes that for the bishops’ upcoming November meeting, “some subjects are clearly off the table, and some facts are simply unmentionable.” Likoudis continues “…the U.S. bishops still cannot admit their two most serious problems: the infestation of the clergy and seminaries with homosexual predators, and the issue of sex education, including homosexual proselytization (i.e. "fighting homophobia").”
The Wanderer writer says that “some of the most vicious lay and clerical pederasts and pedophiles believed that the sexual abuse they inflicted was justified as therapeutic sex education.” Likoudis says that “scores of bishops have stonewalled, deceived, lied to, and ignored parents who have seen their children victimized and led into moral chaos by sex educators and sex education programs, and have covered up the enormously tragic consequences of their sex education agenda.”
Likoudis concludes that even the public exposure of the scandals is being used by dissidents to “demoralize faithful Catholics and deconstruct the traditional understanding and practice of the faith”.
Regarding another book on this issue, Crisis magazine has published an article exposing some serious errors in Michael Rose’s book, Goodby Good Men. In his section on the American College of Louvain, it appears that Rose relied almost entirely on the testimony of an expelled seminarian. Additional research by Crisis indicates that the seminary student’s testimony may have been entirely fabricated and wrongly accused innocent persons.
Rose’s book has also been taken to task for errors by other conservative sources - The National Catholic Register, Culture Wars and Our Sunday Visitor.
Crisis concludes that a book like Goodbye, Good Men is needed since so many were aware that these things were going on and not being dealt with. It is suggested “Rose should rework the book — remove the sections that are either doubtful or, as in the case of Louvain, almost certainly untrue” and that, if done, “Crisis will happily and enthusiastically support him”.
