FAMOUS U.S. JESUIT ADDRESSES SCANDALS IN ILLINOIS SPEECH

Says Apostolic visit to U.S. seminaries must have method to identify moral dissenters

CHICAGO, ILL, September 20, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Jesuit Fr Joseph Fessio, Publisher of Ignatius Press, addressed the Catholic Citizens of Illinois group on September 15 about the sex scandals in the U.S. Church.

Fr. Fessio indicated to the organization that "homosexuality among Priests, Bishops and religious orders is the untold story," and he stated what you see in the papers is not the whole problem. "…What we're not seeing is the problem of religious men involved in homosexual sex that is consensual, and where there are no financial incentives for it to stop, like law suits."

Among many other things Fr. Fessio expressed concern that the upcoming Apostolic Visitation of U.S. seminaries will not be successful unless there is a litmus test implemented for identifying dissenters.

He suggested asking anyone in a position of authority in the seminaries whether they fully accepted three items in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. One of those three is Number 2357: 'Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, the Church has always declared that homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered and under no circumstances can they be approved.'
