UPDATE ON CANADIAN STEM CELL BILL - DEBATE RESUMES MONDAY
Opposition Moves that Bill Be Sent Back To Committee for Further Amendment
OTTAWA, April 4, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Members of the Opposition in Parliament are becoming more and more frustrated with the Prime Minister's Office's wanton manipulation of the projected order of business for sessions. While it was widely believed that the Assisted Human Reproduction Act, bill C-13, would come up for a vote this week, debate on third reading is scheduled to resume Monday April 14.
Since the end of Report Stage debate on March 26, the bill received one day of Third Reading debate on April 1. Official Opposition Health Critic Rob Merrifield moved that the bill "be not now read a third time, but be referred back to the Standing Committee on Health for the purpose of reconsidering clause 18 with the view to allow children born through donor eggs or sperm to know the identity of their biological parents."
Pro-Life leaders across the country have stressed that the bill, as it stands, must be defeated. The bill would sanction in law:
- Harvesting and research on aborted baby body parts
- Creation of human embryos specifically for research
- Destructive research on human embryos
- In Vitro Fertilization (which causes countless deaths of embryos each year)
- Fertility treatments for homosexual couples
- Live Human Embryos to be cryogenically frozen for storage, and more.
Canadians are urged to contact their MPs and urge them to vote against bill C-13.
