American Bar Association Wants Equal Rights for Human Clones
SAN FRANCISCO, August 12, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The American Bar Association (ABA), the largest lawyers organization in the United States, with over 400,000 members, says cloned human beings -- which do not yet exist but which the ABA considers "inevitable" -- must have equal rights.
"We wanted to be ahead of the curve," said Bruce Wilder, a sponsor of the equal-rights-for-clones resolution, "We should be thinking of the legal implications of cloning now."
But some oppose the resolution. "There's very serious scientific doubt that reproductive cloning can work in humans," said Robyn Shapiro at the Center for the Study of Bioethics at the Medical College of Wisconsin. "I also worry that this is going to prompt another series of discussions of whether an embryo is a person" -- an issue many lawyers would prefer not to confront.
