Alzheimer Society Added to Canadian Groups Supporting Embryonic Stem Cell Research
OTTAWA, May 29, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Over the last number of weeks LifeSite has been asked repeatedly for a list of Canadian charities which are supportive of embryonic stem cell research. Support for the controversial research by the charities has led donors with moral convictions to focus their donations elsewhere.
LifeSite recently discovered that The Alzheimer Society of Canada (ASC) supports embryonic stem cell research. The ASC "Statement on Stem Cell Research", developed in June last year, notes "guidelines for stem cell research developed by CIHR and covered by federal legislation will be used by ASC to define the scope of research funded by ASC. Specifically, ASC will support research on existing human embryonic stem cell and pluripotent cell lines, and derivation of new pluripotent and stem cell lines from human tissues."
Even when ruling out funding for creation of embryos specifically for research and human cloning, ASC notes that such restrictions may be changed saying that "at present" such research will not be supported. The policy will be reviewed in 2004.
Other groups which LifeSite has reported as supporting embryonic stem cell research include: The Canadian Cancer Society, Parkinson Society of Canada, Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC), the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, and The Arthritis Society.
