Denmark Permits Destructive Research on Human Embryos
COPENHAGEN, October 29, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a move that has greatly concerned pro-lifers in the European Union, Denmark has given permission for scientists to undertake destructive research with human embryos 'left over' from fertility treatments. The Scientist reports that a law to allow such research came into effect September 1.
The Scientist reports that the bans on both reproductive and therapeutic cloning remain in effect.
The news is particularly troublesome for the European Union since it was at the insistence of Denmark last year that the European Union postponed funding of embryonic stem cell procurement until 2003. Denmark which then held the EU presidency, delayed the 17.5 billion euro scientific research program, of which 300 million euros was to be spent on research on aborted babies and 'left over' human embryos.
