AMA Urges FDA to Allow Morning-After Pill without a Prescription

Also urges renewed U.S. funding of United Nations Population Fund

CHICAGO, June 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The American Medical Association Monday urged the FDA to ease restrictions on prescription-only access to the morning-after pill. The resolution was one of several passed at this year's annual AMA House of Delegates meeting.

"The (Food and Drug Administration's) own advisory committee determined emergency contraceptive pills were safe," claimed AMA committee head Dr. Ronald Davis, who investigated the matter, according to Reuters news report.

The AMA also clamoured for renewed U.S. funding of the United Nations Population Fund and other population-control groups giving credibility to criticisms that the organization is now dominated by persons with a strong ideological agenda.

Canadian Federal Election Buzz - June 15

Middle Ground May Hurt Harper
Stephen Harper's efforts to move the Conservative party to the middle ground may cost him thousands of votes from evangelical Christians, say some religious conservatives. But with Harper's perceived refusal to let social conservatives in his caucus speak their minds, many are looking for a new political home.

Canadian Social Conservatives Get Ready to Get Real
A thirst, a hunger for "reality" is besetting more and more people. They find themselves surrounded by the phony, the artificial. They want the truth, however unpalatable--not just in politics, but in religion, education, crime control, in everything.

Most Recent Poll Suggests Liberal Support Flagging

OTTAWA, June 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - An Ipsos-Reid poll released Monday reveals that Liberal support is continuing to flag, while the Conservatives maintain a small one-percent margin. The poll also revealed that 27 percent of voters were likely to change their mind by election day.

The poll suggests the Conservatives could garner as many as 30 more seats in parliament than the Liberals.

Conservative inroads have been most extensive in Ontario, where the Conservatives now lead the Liberals by a margin of 36 to 34 percent.

Ipsos-Reid president Darrell Bricker told the Globe and Mail that voters are simply not buying the Liberal attempt to portray Conservative leader Stephen Harper as a closet radical conservative, especially on issues like abortion.

Ipsos-Reid pollsters asked Canadians the question: "If a federal election were held tomorrow, which of the following parties' candidates would you be most likely to support?" The break-down is as follows: Conservatives at 32%; Liberals at 31%; NDP at 17%; Bloc at 12%; and Green at 6%.

CBC May be First on Chopping Block if Tories Win, Heritage Minister Warns

BANFF, Alberta, June 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Liberal Heritage Minister Helene Chalifour Scherrer, while campaigning in Banff, warned that under a Conservative government, spending for such Canadian treasures as the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the Canadian Television Fund, the Feature Film Fund, Telefilm Canada, and the National Film Board may be up in the air.

In a last-ditch effort by a failing Liberal election campaign, Scherrer joined with her confraternity in trying to paint Harper as a radical social-conservative. "Look in the mirror - it will be my department and the programs and policies we have to help you earn your livelihood [that will be eliminated]," she said to a group of film and television industry leaders at a convention in Banff. "We believe the risks to this country are real and serious," Scherrer warned.

The CBC, known for outrageous bias and censorship of traditional social views is heavily taxpayer funded. The network has consistently favoured abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality, radical environmentalism, population control and just about every liberal social and economic cause. Pro-life and pro-family advocates have for years complained bitterly about the public broadcaster's manipulation of news and its severe lack of balance on life and family issues.

Pro-Abortion Activist Group Launches Anti-Harper Campaign -- Funded by Liberals

OTTAWA, June 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A women's group claiming non-partisanship is being led by the sister of the B.C. Liberal Party's youth leader, and "backed by Liberal operatives," according to a Vancouver Sun report. The Sun's report, Pro-Choice Website 'a Liberal Lie,' claims that the pro-abortion group, Women Demand Better, is nothing more than a front for a Liberal-led attack trying, once again, to paint Stephen Harper as a radical conservative.

"The purpose of this website is to make Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party aware that their position on abortion and other women's issues is unacceptable," Women Demand Better founder Cassandra Parlee, revealed in a press release. Parlee is a 17 year-old high school student from New Westminster, B.C.

In an interview with the Sun, Parlee said she has "no doubt" that the Conservatives would outlaw abortion.

Conservative MP John Reynolds said the Liberals lie when they say that Harper will introduce abortion restrictions. "Liberals lie," he said. "This is about how low they'll go to try to maintain power."

"When you're in deep trouble in an election campaign you try to paint the Conservative party as an ultra-right-wing Christian right party," Reynolds, MP for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast, said. "And nothing could be further from the truth. Harper has made it very plain."

Seniors in Canada at Greater Risk of Suicide During Illness

Signs of Depression Unheeded by Doctors

TORONTO, June 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences in Toronto has released a study warning physicians that older people may be more susceptible to depression and suicide when they are being treated for other illnesses. The study, published in the journal, Archives of Internal Medicine, shows that seniors have the highest rate of suicide of any age group in Canada.

Dr. David Juurlink, a clinical pharmacologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto headed the study and says that the risk of a successful suicide goes up with the age group. Older people, he says, make more lethal attempts, and often do so within a week of seeing a doctor. Dr.David Conn of Baycrest Centre for Geriatrics said seniors' depression frequently goes undetected. "There's a lot of evidence that many seniors with depression are not being identified and treated," Conn said.

Alex Schadenberg, Executive Director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition says that he is pleased with the tone of the study that treats this as a serious problem that requires preventive action. "At least suicide is being seen within the light of what we should be doing to help these people," he says.

The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition has tracked attitudes toward elderly and other vulnerable people and has seen a dangerous trend developing. "I am concerned that advocates for euthanasia and assisted suicide," says Schadenberg, "might flip this message into a pro physician-assisted suicide argument such as: 'it happens already, it needs to be regulated' or 'they are already doing it, if we legalize it, it will be less messy'."

New Zealand Abortion Rate Rises: Birth Rate Steadily Dropping

WELLINGTON, June 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Newly released statistics are showing a steady increase in the abortion rate in New Zealand. Despite the theory that more sex education and wide distribution of artificial contraceptives reduces the abortion rate, New Zealand had 1130 more abortions in 2003 than 2002. One in three of these were procured by women who had already had one abortion. The jump was even higher for women between the ages of 15 and 20, from 20 to 21 per 1000. One in ten had already had two or more abortions. Last year 89 girls aged 11-14 had abortions. A woman wanting to procure an abortion must have the consent of two doctors, but the national health service pays the costs.

These numbers mean that the women of New Zealand have three times as many abortions as those in the Netherlands and Germany. In 2003, New Zealand had 14.14 births per 1,000 population with the numbers showing a steady drop since 2000 when there were 14.28 per 1000. The population growth rate is slowing to replacement level and, like most developed countries the increase is from immigration. This means that New Zealand will inevitably start following the trend of the rest of the developed world in an aging population and imminent demographic crisis. Most countries with such low birth rates are facing labour shortages and fears of economic trouble ahead when young workers will not be available to replace those who retire.

Planned Parenthood International claims that New Zealand is a country where the contraceptive message has been heard “despite an active anti-abortion, anti-choice lobby, there is general acceptance of family planning services.”

StatsCan Report Confirms Lower than Claimed Incidence of Homosexuality, at 1%

OTTAWA, June 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Statistics Canada released its first-ever survey of "sexual orientation" Tuesday, revealing a one percent incidence of homosexual persons. About 1.3 percent of men considered themselves homosexual, about twice the proportion of 0.7 percent among women. The survey revealed the absolute number of individuals who self-report as being "gay" or "lesbian," at 316,800. The Canadian population is 31,752,842.

The findings contradict sharply the inaccurate but widely accepted claims of sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, who alleged that homosexuals comprise as much as 10 percent of the population. Canadian incidence is in line with U.S. statistics.

In his book, "No Need to Lie," Gareth Kirkby charged that the incidence of homosexuality is artificially and grossly inflated. "This tendency to exaggerate may go all the way back to our spiritual forefather, Alfred C Kinsey," Kirkby charged. "A powerful new biography by James Jones offers strong evidence that Kinsey rigged his social experiments that produced results that are quoted to this day. You know the figures; 10 percent of men are gay . . . Our personal experience strongly suggests that this [10 percent] figure, despite its omnipresence, just isn't accurate," Kirkby emphasized.
