National Pro-Life Group Decries Rush to Pass Stem Cell Bill Through Senate
Both national pro-life groups not allowed to address committee despite repeated requests
OTTAWA, March 4, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In response to the approval on Wednesday of the stem cell Bill C-6 by a Senate committee, Canada's national political pro-life group, Campaign Life Coalition (CLC), decried the haste to shove the bill through the Senate and to not hear more diverse views on the legislation.
In a press release, CLC emphasized that the "legislation allows the use and killing of human embryos in scientific experimentation and, in spite of assurances to the contrary, does not ban cloning." As well, CLC stresses that "The term 'human being' is not defined in a bill which deals with the reproduction of human beings!"
The national organization, which has extensively researched the legislation over the past few years, expressed its dismay that the Senate committee refused to hear its presentation and rejected a presentation from Life Canada, the educational wing of the movement.
CLC national president and vice-president of International Right to Life, Jim Hughes, stated "People have a right to express their concerns on such vital legislation. Justice has not been served".
Karen Murawsky, Public Affairs Director of the CLC Ottawa Lobby Office added that "There seems to be a political desire to complete the passage of this Bill before an election call. We find this to be a frivolous and unreasonable cause when the lives of human beings rest upon the timing - not of war, nor natural disaster, nor plague - but of a pending election".
Campaign Life Coalition is calling upon the Senate of Canada to reject the urgency that certain lobby groups are using to plead for quick passage of the bill and to take the time for further in-depth considerations of Bill C-6.
