Pope Suggests He May Have Been Too Lenient with Dissenters
VATICAN, May 17, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In an autobiography to be released tomorrow on his 84th birthday, Pope John Paul II suggests that he has been too lenient with dissenters. "I think that in this aspect, maybe I have done too little. There is always this problem of how to balance authority and service. Perhaps I need to criticise myself for not having tried hard enough to lead," the pope wrote.
The statement contradicts the liberal media and dissenters in the Church who have dishonestly characterized the faithful Pope as authoritarian. However, Catholic historians have pointed out that this Pope, compared to Pope's throughout history, has actually been relatively very lenient and has trusted in extensive teaching and his personal witness of holiness to keep his flock on the straight path.
On Sunday, the Italian newspaper Il Giornale published excerpts of the book which reveal John Paul II to be a deeply spiritual man, without the ideological pride that prevents many from expressing religious practices.
In one passage he speaks of his relationship with his guardian angel. "My guardian angel knows what I am doing. My faith in him, in his protective presence is something that is continually deepening in me," he wrote.
