Catholic Hospitals Inducing Labour and Killing Handicapped Children
Priest ethicist says it's OK because the children aren't going to live anyway
September 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The use of euphemisms has been a great help to the abortion industry. Words and phrases like, 'products of conception,' 'interruption of pregnancy,' 'genetic termination,' and now, 'early induction of labour,' are used to muddy the waters about what is actually happening in the abortion facility or hospital.
Since the Second World War, the eugenics movement has been evolved by professional ethicists into the pseudo-science of bioethics. It is in bioethics that the practice of re-defining terms has reached its creative zenith. Now it has been discovered that two Catholic hospitals in the US have been killing handicapped unborn babies under the cover phrase, 'early induction of labour.'
Tom Szyszkiewicz, a reporter for the Catholic periodicals, Our Sunday Visitor and the National Catholic Register, has discovered that two Catholic hospitals, Loyola Health System in Chicago, and Providence Health System on the West Coast and Alaska, are performing a procedure called "early induction for fetuses with anomalies incompatible with life" or EIFWAIL. Syszkiewicz notes that "the child, once born, dies because of either prematurity or because of his handicaps or both."
Szyszkiewicz reported in the March 7, 2004, Our Sunday Visitor that the Catholic facilities claimed that in carrying out early induction of labour, they were acting according to the US bishops' ethics guidelines for Catholic health care, which says, "For proportionate reason, labour may be induced after the fetus is viable."
Jill Stanek, a pro-life activist writing for World Net Daily said she called the hospitals for confirmation. She reports that Loyola's staff ethicist, a priest named Fr. Jack O'Callahan, justified the action. After affirming that the hospital does indeed commit 'early induction' abortions he said that they only killed children who are 'not going to live anyway.'

UNFPA Sings the Usual Tune: More Abortion, Sterilization, Condoms in Third World or Planet is Doomed
NEW YORK, September 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The United Nations Population Fund has released its annual 'State of World Population' report. The UNFPA's indomitable thesis is that world population is growing beyond the capacity to produce food and that more contraception and abortion is needed to safeguard women's 'rights' in the developing world. Despite the growing alarm at the dropping birth rate and the greying workforce in most countries, the UNFPA continues to say that 'universal access' to contraception and abortion "is an essential condition for meeting the UN's Millennium Development Goals to reduce global poverty by 2015."
They also highlight a policy shift that emphasizes the same rampant individualism that has created many of the internal social problems in the developed nations. Their argument is that women must have access to the workforce and the 'right' to abandon family life in order to enjoy their "rights and equality and individual choice," in their lives. This essential premise of feminism has become the accepted wisdom of North America and Europe where the dropping birth rate, the 50% divorce rate and escalating rates of violent crime among teenagers has given social scientists pause.
The UNFPA continues to insist that AIDS and the plague of new STD's can only be stopped with increased 'reproductive and sexual health information and services." This is contradicted by the actual results of public sex-ed programmes in developed countries where the rate of teenage pregnancy and abortion has skyrocketed, and as many as 30 new sexually transmitted diseases have come into existence since 1965.
Deciphering UN-Speak is a full time occupation for pro-life lobbyists at the UN. They have made progress in exposing some of the euphemisms commonly in use in UNFPA documents. 'Reproductive Rights' and "family planning services' refer to abortion, contraception and sterilization. The report complains that as many as 350 million couples in the world "still lack access to a full range of family planning services." It goes on to connect this with the high rates of maternal mortality and AIDS. Nothing is said of the highly successful campaigns in African countries endorsing abstinence and fidelity in marriage in dramatically reducing the rates of AIDS.

Canadian Prime Minister Broadcasted Taking Lord's Name in Vain, Apologizes
OTTAWA, September 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - During a televised conference of Provincial Health Ministers with Prime Minister Paul Martin, the Prime Minister was overheard on national television blurting out "Jesus Christ". An irritated Martin acknowledged cursing saying he thought he was swearing under his breath.
He joked about the incident while mentioning his aunt called him to tell him to wash his mouth out with soap, and said he told her he was calling out to God for help in the difficult meeting.
The Catholic Prime Minister supports both abortion and homosexual "marriage". He has been openly criticized by Canadian Bishop Fred Henry for his claim to be a Catholic while advocating stands against life and family.

US Bishops Conference Liberals Lambasted in National Review Over Presidential Questionnaire
New York, September 14, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In today's National Review OnLine, Culture of Life President Austin Ruse addresses the USCCB withdrawal of its controversial presidential questionnaire. The framing of the questions and the issues addressed by the questionnaire have been receiving strong criticism for the advantage they give to John Kerry, despite his strong pro-abortion position.
In "Holy Democrats! The Catholic presidential questionnaire is dead - thank God" , Ruse voices what increasing numbers of Catholics and non-Catholics have been thinking about these unhelpful questionnaires produced by liberal, dissenting staff of U.S. and Canadian bishops conferences.
Ruse makes it clear that he is not criticizing all the bishops. He writes, "The bishops did not create this questionnaire. The bishops did not edit it. It is likely that hardly any bishops even saw it before or after the fact. Why the bishops have allowed this to happen is an open question. But the fact remains that a cabal of mostly left-wing laymen who staff the government-relations office of the USCCB created it."
The lack of genuine priority given to the life issues by Catholic Church bureaucrats has for many years been one of the most painful obstacles to success for U.S. and Canadian pro-life organizations. In Canada's recent federal election, pro-life leaders were once again dismayed that the life and family issues were clearly again not the high action priority that they should have been for church bureaucrats and institutions.
Regarding the U.S. situation, Ruse says the "fact is that it seems the USCCB liberals do their darnedest to undermine the life issues. They do this by consistently lumping them in with issues that are frankly not that important."
However, a shift is in the works, although so far much more in the U.S. than in more uniformly liberal - if not socialist - Canada.
Ruse says, "The dreadful questionnaire has been pulled. In the past few years more and more of the bishops have begun speaking out against the scandal of pro-abortion Catholic politicians. The bishops as a body overwhelmingly voted in June that pro-abortion politicians must not present themselves for communion."
The intimidating power of Catholic Bishops conferences, which have no real religious authority, has for decades caused many Catholic bishops to abdicate their own authority on important issues to the often ideologically oriented conference bureaucrats and their allied bishops.
Ruse notes that, at least in the U.S., an historic change to the power of the bureaucrats is finally beginning to happen. He writes, "Cracks are appearing in the Soviet-like façade of the lay bureaucracy at the bishops' conference. Some bishops are getting uppity. Like peasants revolting against their masters, a growing number of mostly young, energetic, and orthodox bishops have begun to scale the walls."
It is no secret that pro-life and pro-family leaders across North America are cheering for the spreading of this trend which many believe will likely, finally, bring many more bishops and dioceses into the battles that count and possibly stop the North American moral and cultural meltdown.

Same-Sex "Marriage" in Another Canadian Province likely to be Legalized Tomorrow
WINNIPEG, September 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A judge in Manitoba, after a conference with homosexual plaintiffs challenging their right to "marry" in the province, has agreed to change the law. Court of Queen's Bench Justice Douglas Yard is expected to declare the province's opposition to same-sex "marriage" unconstitutional in a public ruling in court Thursday.
The federal government said it would not oppose the measure, a first, since the federal justice ministry opposed the same measure in court battles in Ontario, B.C. and Quebec. The feds asked for a deferral in the Yukon decision, until the Supreme Court decided on the issue federally. Justice Minister Irwin Cotler announced in August that the federal government would no longer oppose any court challenges to existing marriage laws, or ask for adjournments for the Supreme Court reference to be heard.
Marriage licenses are expected to be granted to the three same-sex couples involved in the Manitoba suit this week: Stefphany Cholakis and Michelle Ritchot, Laura Fouhse and Snake Kunda, and Chris Vogel and Richard North.
Illustrating the degree to which the furor is media-driven, the Winnipeg Free Press stated: "Marriage is one of the last remaining areas of discrimination in Manitoba against gays and lesbians."

Professor Publicly Admonishes Bishop for Lack of Pro-Life Leadership at Pro-Life Awards Luncheon
AUGUSTA, Maine, September 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A University of Maine professor publicly chastised a bishop for not putting his pro-life rhetoric into action, by denying pro-abortion Catholic politicians Communion. Earth sciences professor Terrence Hughes told Diocese of Portland Bishop Richard J. Malone that he is "talking the talk" while failing to "[walk] the walk," according to a ManieToday.com report.
Hughes told Bishop Malone that his promotion of the pro-life cause is hypocritical, given that he does not direct his priests to deny Communion to pro-abortion politicians. "The action you took is in direct contrast to the words you share with us today," Hughes stated.
Bishop Malone was the key speaker at an annual Pro Life Education Association awards luncheon Saturday. Malone said he would not change his position to continue giving Communion to pro-abortion politicians, arguing that he would rather convince them of their wrong first.
"These people have not been excommunicated," Bishop Malone argued. "A whole lot of our Catholic brothers and sisters are not with us on this thing. We need to engage these people in dialogue."

Evansville Bishop Would Refuse Communion to Public Dissenters from Catholic Teachings
EVANSVILLE, September 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Another Catholic bishop has lined up on the side of Vatican direction and stated that he would refuse communion to politicians who publicly deny their faith on abortion or homosexuality. Bishop Gerald Gettelfinger of Evansville Indiana said in a talk to the local Rotarians, that Catholic politicians who vocally support abortion rights or gay marriage are not in communion with Catholic teachings.
Gettelfinger said that though Catholic voters had the responsibility of voting in accordance with Catholic principles, reception of communion was up to the conscience of the individual. However, politicians or other public figures who publicly supported abortion, and criticized the teachings of the Church would be refused. The bishop added that no one in his diocese would be refused under those conditions. "I know of no one who would be so brash in this community. No one," he said in an interview with Philip Elliott, the Faith and Values Reporter at The Evansville Courier & Press.
He called on Catholic politicians to guard their integrity. "At the risk of losing your jobs, I insist that you be driven by personal integrity. ... Be true at the risk of defeat."

Christian Group Warns Proposed UK Religious Hate Law a Threat to Free Speech
LONDON, September 15, 2004 (LifeSiteNew.com) - A British Christian group is warning that proposed legislation before the House of Lords may usher in an era of religious discrimination and threaten free speech in the UK. In a press release, the Barnabas Fund issued a warning over a proposed law by the British government to ban incitement to religious hatred.
British Home Secretary David Blunkett announced that the government is planning to introduce a new law banning incitement to religious hatred "as soon as possible" in a speech given in July. Blunkett is calling for an extension of existing legislation banning incitement to racial hatred to cover religious groups as well -- in order to presumably prevent crimes such as extreme right-wing organizations stirring up hatred against Muslims.
Critics of the law, however, point out that existing legislation banning incitement to violence and other criminal acts already provides protection. The new law could end up being used to prevent all reasonable debate and criticism of another person's religion, Barnabas warns.
Fears that the law could be a major blow to freedom of speech are not based on speculation, but on direct evidence. In Victoria, Australia, for example, two Christian pastors have already found themselves in court under a similar law after raising human rights concerns about Islamic teaching on a website and at a seminar. They are accused of stirring up hatred against Muslims despite the fact that both repeatedly emphasized that Christians should show nothing but love to Muslims.
