Ottawa Archbishop: Government Wants to Normalize Sodomy and We Say No
OTTAWA, April 11, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Speaking at the March for Marriage rally Saturday before a crowd of over 15,000, Ottawa Archbishop Marcel Gervais said "Our government wants sodomy to be accepted as part of the norm and we refuse that." The Archbishop also said he stands "arm in arm" with his brother bishop in Calgary, Bishop Fred Henry. Due to complaints about his presenting the Catholic teaching on homosexuality, Bishop Henry is facing a possible tribunal hearing before the Alberta Human Rights Commission.
Canadians from all faiths, backgrounds and regions of Canada took part in the March on Parliament Hill to urge MPs to defeat the Liberal same-sex 'marriage' Bill C-38.
Other religious leaders speaking at the March included: 100 Huntley Street Founder David Mainse, Imam Dr. Gamal Soleiman of the Ottawa Islamic Community, Sikh leader Amarjit Singh Mann of the Ontario Gurdwaras Committee, Fr. Rueiss Awad of the Coptic Orthodox Church, Rev. Dominic Tse Toronto Chinese Evangelical Christian Community, Fr. Peter Chin of the Toronto Chinese Catholic Taskforce on Marriage, Monsignor Terence D'Souza of St. Francis Xavier Parish, Mississauga, Presbyterian Minister Rev. Tristan Emmanuel of Equipping Christians for the Public Square and Dr. Charles McVety President of Defend Marriage and the Canada Family Action Coalition.
Msgr D'Souza told the assembled crowd that he could see that that the government in imposing homosexual marriage was following a "logical course" since the government already took away the right to life for the unborn and this follows the same path.
Imam Soleiman incited laughs from the crowd and the interest of the media as he brought the central issue of the debate into focus noting that in all his 78 years of life he had never seen "an ox jump another ox".
While not present physically at the rally, Pope John Paul II was invoked many times by religious leaders and political leaders, by Catholic and non-Catholics alike. As Conservative Senator Anne Cools put it, "I join John Paul II in his defence of marriage as the union of one man and one woman."
