Roberts Confirmation Expected But Along Party Lines According to Analyst
WASHINGTON, September 20, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The confirmation vote for US Supreme Court nominee Judge John Roberts will happen Thursday, with one conservative analyst suggesting that the strong pro-abortion lobbying against Roberts will divide the Senate, but that his confirmation will ultimately succeed because of a pro-life Republican majority.
Chief Counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, Jay Sekulow, said the fact that liberal public interest groups are complaining is “a really good thing.” For example, Sekulow said, “the fact that ‘People for the American Way’ have opposed John Roberts should be worn by John Roberts as a badge of honor.” People for the American Way had claimed, “In memo after memo, Roberts demonstrated hostility to the laws and remedies that protect the fundamental rights and liberties of all Americans.”
NARAL, the National Abortion Rights Action League, has been one of the most vocal groups that have opposed Roberts confirmation. “John Roberts filed court briefs supporting violent fringe groups and a convicted clinic bomber,” an advertisement claimed. Sekulow responded, “Based on falsehoods, the NARAL ad badly distorted the facts of the Supreme Court case involving pro-life demonstrators. The stakes are high, and NARAL will do anything it can to oppose John Roberts,” he explained. “After universal outrage over the ad, NARAL decided to pull it.”
Sekulow, in his daily show, Jay Sekulow Live, outlined the tactics of several pro-abortion public interest groups, including the Alliance for Justice, NARAL, moveon.org, and the People for the American Way.
Sekulow warned, “Make no mistake, [pro-abortion Senators] have learned something from this nomination, so as the next [nominee] comes forward, they’re going to ratchet this up a little bit.”
US President George W. Bush said he will meet with the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday to get input on a replacement for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day-O’Connor.
