Mississauga South Riding Report - Outstanding Pro-life Liberal MP Facing Serious Challenge
MISSISSAUGA, ON, January 17, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) –Mississauga South residents enjoy the option of being able to vote on Jan. 23 for a Liberal MP with an exceptional record of support for human life and traditional marriage. Paul Szabo has distinguished himself as one of the most prominent pro-life and pro-family MPs since he was first elected in 1993.
Over the years, he has played a leading role in opposing such measures as same-sex “marriage,” research upon embryonic human beings, cloning, euthanasia and doctor-assisted suicide, while writing a book on fetal alcohol syndrome, supporting an investigation into whether all abortions are medically necessary and regularly attending annual March for Life observances in Ottawa.
Although he won his riding by more than 8,000 votes in 2004, Szabo is dealing with a serious challenge in the face of what election observers are calling a “rising blue tide” of Conservative Party support in Ontario. The problem for pro-life and pro-family supporters is that Conservative leader Stephen Harper has made statements, particularly in the last week of the campaign, that indicate he will use whatever influence he has in Parliament to ensure pro-life legislation doesn’t come to a vote. Harper has also been offering only tepid promises of a free vote on the legal definition of marriage.
Notable for Mississauga South voters is the fact that the Conservative Party candidate in their riding, Phil Green, has refused to take a pro-life, pro-family position and was actually classified as “pro-abortion” during the 2004 election by Campaign Life Coalition, the national political arm of the Canadian pro-life movement.
