Warsaw Poland: Gay Pride Parade and Counter Demonstration set for June 10
by Hilary White
WARSAW, June 5, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – City officials in Warsaw announced last Thursday that they will allow a “Gay Pride” parade to go ahead Saturday June 10. This news comes after president Lech Kaczynski, banned the demonstrations two years in a row, in 2004 and 2005, while serving as mayor of Warsaw, .
In March, Poland’s Constitutional Court ruled that homosexual demonstrators need only inform city officials that a public demonstration would be taking place. Gay Pride activists subsequently announced that the parade would be going ahead. At the same time, the League of Polish Families party announced that they would be holding a counter demonstration the same day.
Recently homosexual activists who went to the European Court of Human Rights regarding the Kaczynski's decision to refuse the Gay Pride event were able to convince the court to hear the case.
A similar homosexual demonstration in Romania's capital Bucharest degenerated into a riot this past weekend with police using tear gas to break up demonstrators.
Two weeks ago, gay activists in Moscow went ahead with an illegal demonstration that also degenerated into violence, with police arresting 120. Moscow’s Mayor, Yury Luzhkov told local media that western moral degeneracy was not welcome in Moscow. “Morality works here. If one has any deviations from normal principles in organizing one's sexual life, these deviations should not be exhibited for all to see,” Mayor Luzhkov said.
Last year, officials in the Polish city of Poznan refused permission for a homosexual parade saying that it would present a danger to the public. Activists went ahead with the march anyway and approximately 65 activists were arrested.
EU officials suggested at the time that refusal to allow the marches might result in punitive actions against Poland for its contravention of article 6 of the Treaty of Nice, which states that countries must protect the rights of minorities.
In 2005, the European Union threatened Poland for having elected a Catholic president who opposed this view of homosexuality and wanted to assert the rights of the traditional family. Under Article 7 of the Treaty, a country that violates human rights – as defined by the EU – can be deprived of voting rights.
In North American cities where it originated, Gay Pride parades are characterized by full male nudity and displays of mock sexual activity, along with anti-American and anti-Christian demonstrations.
Despite beginning to display the social erosion that usually coincides with secularisation, Poland is over 90% Roman Catholic. Public opinion in Poland is still strongly in favour of traditional Christian social values being represented in law.
