Alabama Abortion Clinic Closed After Botched RU-486 Abortion
by Hilary White
BIRMINGHAM, May 19, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Alabama Department of Public Health has reported the suspension of the license of an abortion facility in Birmingham after a botched RU-486 abortion, using non-medically qualified staff.
In Alabama, only a qualified MD can perform an abortion or ultrasound. Patient A was told that the gestational age of her child was six weeks and opted to abort. The report says that a non-medically qualified staff member at the Summit Abortion Clinic gave the woman an ultrasound and informed her the baby was six weeks old. She was then given Mifeprex, the brand name of the abortion drug RU-486.
The abortion went forward, despite the fact that the woman’s blood pressure was “critically and dangerously high that (it) indicated a need for immediate medical treatment.”
Six days later, the woman was taken to hospital “with the head of a baby protruding. While at the hospital, (she), delivered a stillborn, macerated, six pound, four ounce baby."
Summit also allegedly falsified their report to say that Patient A had been seen by a physician on site.
The report concluded that there is “no adequate means of protecting the public other than emergency suspension of the (facility’s) license.”
