Thousands Gather to Pray for National Spiritual Revival in America

Leaders encourage repentance for impurity and the crime of abortion

By Elizabeth O'Brien

NASHVILLE, July 9, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Thousands of people, primarily young adults, gathered in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday to pray for a spiritual revival in the United States, Christian Newswire (CN) reports.

A crowd of people gathered at the LP Field, home of the Tennessee Titans football team, to join together in a massive prayer rally organized by The Call. Although news services reported various numbers, Local TV channel WKRN estimated that the crowd swelled to approximately 100,000 by the end of the day.

Many participants had fasted for days from food and other personal indulgences prior to the gathering. Others joined the fasting from their homes and watched the event on television.

In a counter parallel to the Summer of Love rally that drew 100,000 young people to San Francisco in the 1960's, the main intention of the day was for an increase in sexual morality. Lou Engle, founder of The Call, told crowds during the 12-hour event, "We've come here with a faith that God can turn a nation and a mighty shift can take place here today," the Tennessean reports. He also challenged them to fight addictions to pornography and substance abuse.

The topic of abortion was another issue that was raised during the day. According to CN, presidential candidate and Kansas Senator Sam Brownback addressed the crowds, asking forgiveness for the national crime of abortion, saying, "We've seen 40 million abortions in America, and I ask for forgiveness."

Supporters and leaders of the pro-life movement also attended the national prayer gathering. Many of these were heading to Wichita, Kansas, for a second gathering called "The Wichita Awakening." Taking place on July 14-16, this event is specifically devoted to praying for an end to abortion in the US.

Operation Rescue President Troy Newman stated, "As long as innocent blood continues to be shed in our nation, we cannot expect God's blessing." He continued, "We need to seek God in serious prayer and repentance if we expect our nation to turn around. What better place to pray for an end to abortion than in Wichita, the nation's late-term abortion capital."
