Norwegian Government to Companies: Include 40% Women on Boards or be Dissolved

By Hilary White

OSLO, October 15, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The left-leaning government of Norway has issued an ultimatum to businesses: increase the number of women on the board of directors or be dissolved. 140 Norwegian companies must increase the number of women on their boards of directors to 40 per cent or face state-enforced dissolution, according to the Norwegian news service Aftenposten.

Equality minister Karita Bekkemellem told Aftenposten that companies failing to meet the 40 per cent quota will face involuntary dissolution from January 1. The policy was put in place by a previous centre-right government coalition and enthusiastically endorsed by the new Labour party government.
